Homily for Mary, Mother of God, preached at Immaculate Heart of Mary in Towson, MD on New Year's Eve 2020.
Most of us are happy to put 2020 behind us. It has been a difficult year. As we celebrate the Feast of Mary's motherhood, we may get wrapped up in the serenity conveyed by most nativity scenes. While that may be a consolation, let's not forget the turmoil and travail that took place prior to the Lord's birth: the stress of a pregnant virgin, the travelling to Bethlehem for the census on a donkey, the rustic conditions that awaited the Lord's birth. It wasn't easy. Nor was 2020!
Yet, when all was said and done we hear of Mary quietly pondering the events surrounding that birth and simple shepherds walking await rejoicing with an unimaginable exuberance! The point: While not easy, God gets us through anything.
The turning of the calendar to a new year changes little, but gives us reason to hope. We are getting closer, but we can't get around the conditions of the present state of things. We can only go THROUGH them - and the Lord always accompanies us through!
