"Better Than Nice: The Powerful Effects of Baptism" (1/12/2020)

Homily delivered for the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord at St. Joseph Church, Cockeysville, MD.
So many parents want the best for their children and will comment that they wish their child to be baptize so they will grow up to be nice people. While that's a nice thought, it has nothing to do with baptism, as one can be good, nice, and ethical without being baptized.
Rather, baptism bestows an identity on us much in the same way that Jesus was proclaimed "beloved Son" at his own baptism. It cleanses us of original sin but, more importantly, bestows the gift of grace so that we have the power to make the right choices. When we cooperate with that grace, we answer our call to discipleship.
When we cling to our baptismal identity as a son or daughter of God as central to our core we avoid self-identifying based on accomplishments or failures.
